Hawaii residents saw average gas prices dip around most of the islands this past week and Honolulu’s average gas price declined by three cents to $2.72 a gallon, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.  The current Hawaii state average for a gallon of regular slipped to $2.89, down a penny from last week, 20 cents less than last month and $1.31 a gallon lower than a year ago.  Average gas prices this week dropped below $3 per gallon in every state for the first time since June 2009, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report.

Honolulu’s average gas price is 23 cents lower than a month ago and $1.41 less than this time last year.  In Hilo, the average gas price is $2.84 per gallon, four cents less than last week, 18 cents less than last month and $1.22 cents less than this time a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.31, one cent higher since last Thursday, 13 cents less on this date last month and $1.09 a gallon less than on this date last year.

“AAA estimates that American consumers are spending nearly $350 million less on gasoline per day compared to a year ago. Hawaii ($2.89) still sits with Alaska ($2.96), California ($2.95), Nevada ($2.91) and Utah ($2.66) as the top five most expensive gasoline markets in the country today.  But in Alabama ($1.99), Mississippi ($1.98), New Jersey ($1.96), South Carolina ($1.96) and Tennessee ($2.00) motorists are paying the lowest pump prices in the nation,” according to AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida.

“Motorists can find current gas prices along their route with the free AAA Mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android, available at AAA.com/mobile. The app also can be used by AAA members to map a trip, find discounts, book a hotel and access AAA roadside assistance,” she said.
