Gas Prices Jump Ahead Of July Fourth Holiday

Gas prices rose throughout the state over the past week ahead of the Independence Day holiday, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s statewide average price for regular is $3.23 a gallon, which is up three cents from last week, up five cents from last month and down 41 cents from a year ago at this time, according to GasPrices.AAA.com.

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular rose two cents to $3.03 per gallon, which is three cents higher than a month ago and 49 cents less than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average price is $3.47, which is two cents higher than last week, six cents more than a month ago and 26 cents lower than on this date a year ago. 

In Kahului, the average price is $3.51, which is six cents more than last Thursday, eight cents higher than a month ago and 32 cents lower than on this date a year ago.  Lihue’s average price for regular is $3.56, which is one cent higher than last Thursday, four cents higher than last month and 25 cents lower than a year ago today. 

“Hawaii won’t be open for tourism until Aug. 1, but we have seen street traffic gradually increasing and we expect more local residents will be on the road this holiday weekend,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager.
