Gas Prices Drop More Slowly

Gasoline prices may have plateaued with prices increasing by a penny in some regions, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s statewide average price is $3.23 a gallon, which is three cents lower than last week, 23 cents less than a month ago and 38 cents less than the price on this date last year, according to GasPrices.AAA.com.

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular inched closer to $3 per gallon at $3.05, down three cents from last week, 28 cents lower than a month ago and 43 cents less than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average price is $3.48, up a penny compared to a week ago, 11 cents lower than on this date last month and 23 cents lower than on this date a year ago. 

In Kahului, the average price is $3.55, which a penny higher than last Thursday, 11 cents lower than a month ago and 25 cents lower than on this date a year ago.  Lihue’s average price for regular is $3.52, which is three cents lower than last Thursday, 21 cents lower than last month and 32 cents lower than a year ago today. 

“Price declines may have found the bottom with the Par Pacific reducing throughput rates at the oil refinery because of reduced demand,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. The next few days will tell if this is the bottom or a plateau, as oil prices worldwide have continued to drop.”
