For the first time in four years, Hawaii residents have had a week of average statewide gas prices below $3.50 a gallon, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The current state price average for a gallon of regular is $3.46 – the lowest level since October 2010. The state average price dipped below $3.50 on Jan. 2. Today’s state price is four cents less than on New Year’s Day, 31 cents less than last month, and 51 cents lower than a year ago.
Honolulu’s average price of $3.33 dropped by four cents a gallon since last Thursday and is 34 cents less than last month and 54 cents less than on this date a year ago. In Hilo, the average gas price is $3.41 per gallon, down six cents from last week, 25 cents less than last month and 49 cents less than this time a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.70 a gallon, down three cents from last week, 35 cents lower than last month and 51 cents less on this date last year.
“Hawaii motorists are continuing to pay lower prices at the pump due to lower oil prices, which have dipped below $50 a barrel this week,” said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. “However, with the Alaska state average dropping below $3 a gallon this week, Hawaii is now the only state with average prices above $3 a gallon. Six states – Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas – now have average prices below $2.”
