Hawaii gas price averages saw increases during the past week but prices are still at least $1 a gallon less than a year ago, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The current Hawaii state average for a gallon of regular is $3.13, seven cents more than last week, a penny less than last month and $1.24 a gallon lower than a year ago.
Honolulu’s average gas price sits at $3.03, nine cents more since last Thursday, one cent lower from last month and $1.31 a gallon less than a year ago. In Hilo, the average gas price is $3.09 per gallon, three cents more than last week, four cents less than last month and $1.11 less than this time a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.25, two cents more since last Thursday, two cents more than on this date last month and $1.21 less on this date last year.
“While prices have ticked up, they’re still much lower than last year. AAA estimates that U.S. households have spent about $400 less on gasoline, due to lower prices so far this year, in comparison to the same period in 2014,” according to AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. “These household savings can be used in other ways like for travel, attractions and entertainment, household purchases or an emergency fund,” she added.
