Heading into the New Year, Hawaii residents and visitors are enjoying another week of lower gas prices and bigger budget savings, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The current state price average for a gallon of regular is $3.51 – the lowest level since December 2010. Today’s state price is five cents less than last Wednesday, 35 cents less than last month, and 43 cents lower than a year ago.
Honolulu’s average price of $3.37 dropped by seven cents a gallon since last Wednesday and is 39 cents less than last month and 45 cents less than on this date a year ago. In Hilo, the average gas price is $3.48 per gallon, down three cents from last Wednesday, 29 cents less than last month and 44 cents less than this time a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.75 a gallon, down two cents from last Wednesday, 37 cents lower than last month and 46 cents less on this date last year.
“AAA estimates that Americans saved about $14 billion on gasoline this year compared to 2013, based on monthly prices and consumption. U.S. households in 2014 saved an average of nearly $120 on gasoline compared to the previous year,” said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. “State average prices dropped between 5 and 15 cents a gallon this past week with Alaska at $3.06 a gallon, California at $2.64, Montana at $2.25 and Nevada at $2.49. A few states currently show averages below $2.00 a gallon on www.fuelgaugereport.aaa.com.”
