Hawaii residents saw a mixed bag of average gas price ups and downs around the islands this past week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The current Hawaii state average for a gallon of regular is $3.33, down one cent from last week, three cents less than last month and a dollar a gallon lower than a year ago. On the mainland, California’s state average of $3.85 a gallon is 52 cents higher today than Hawaii’s state average for regular due to a recent gas shortage price spike.
Honolulu’s average gas price slipped by two cents to $3.23 and is seven cents lower than a month ago and $1.08 less than this time last year. In Hilo, the average gas price is $3.31 per gallon, a penny more than last week, unchanged from last month and 83 cents less than this time a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.45, one cent more since last Thursday, a penny less than on this date last month and $1.01 less than on this date last year.
“While small penny a gallon increases were seen in some areas this week, retail gas prices are still about a dollar or more a gallon less than a year ago,” said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. “To achieve maximum fuel economy, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule and do not ignore dash warning lights. And to find the lowest gas prices around you, use an app such as the AAA app for Apple and Android phones. ”
