Hawaii is closing out the year with some hefty gas price drops in most major metropolitan areas, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average regular unleaded gas price for Hawaii is $5.03, which is seven cents lower than last Thursday. The average national price is $3.16, which is six cents higher than a week ago.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.97, which is eight cents lower than last week, 19 cents lower than last month, and 74 cents higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.98, which is the same as last week, nine cents lower than last month, and 64 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price of $5.07 is ten cents lower than last week, 21 cents lower than last month and 56 cents higher than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $5.42, which is six cents lower than last week, 12 cents lower than last month, and 79 cents higher than a year ago.
“The state’s cheapest gas stations today are charging between $4 and $4.40 a gallon,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “With all the 2022 price volatility, this year is by far the most expensive ever for gas prices. The 2022 annual average price for the state will likely be $5.14 a gallon, which is the second most expensive in the U.S. next to California’s expected $5.49 a gallon annual average. The previous record year for Hawaii gas prices was in 2012, when the statewide average price for the year was $4.31.”
