AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch: Prices Up in Most Areas

Local gas prices increased in most areas during the past week, but still, local motorists continue to pay less at the pump than a year ago, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s statewide average price is $2.62, up five cents from last week, up two cents from this date last month and down 57 cents from a year ago, according to the www.AAAFuelGaugeReport.com.

In Honolulu, today’s average price is $2.42, which is five cents more than last week, up two cents from last month and 68 cents lower than last year.  The Hilo average price is $2.67, two cents higher than last Thursday, four cents higher than last month and 44 cents lower than on this date a year ago.  Wailuku’s average is $3.09, unchanged since last Thursday, three cents less than last month and 23 cents less than on this date a year ago.

“West Coast gas prices remain among the highest in the nation, led by California ($2.80) and Hawaii ($2.62), which are the only states with averages about $2.50 per gallon.  Regional neighbors Nevada ($2.49), Alaska ($2.46) and Washington ($2.45) join the rankings as the top five most expensive markets.  Six out of 10 of the nation’s top 10 most expensive retail markets are located in this region,” said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida.  “At the same time, Hawaii motorists are paying 57 cents less per gallon than a year ago which helps family budgets stretch further.”
