Hawaii residents and summer travelers enjoyed a slight decline in average gas prices in most areas around the islands again this past week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The current Hawaii state average for a gallon of regular is $3.34, down one cent from last week, a penny more than last month and a dollar a gallon lower than a year ago. In mainland, news, California’s state average of $3.88 a gallon is 54 cents higher today than Hawaii’s state average for regular. This occurred because California experienced a gas shortage price spike this past week which sent its average fuel prices soaring over Hawaii’s, according to energy analysts.
Honolulu’s average gas price slipped by three cents to $3.25 and is two cents lower than a month ago and $1.06 less than this time last year. In Hilo, the average gas price is $3.30 per gallon, a penny less than last week, one cent more than last month and 86 cents less than this time a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.44, unchanged from last Thursday, two cents less than on this date last month and $1.02 less than on this date last year.
“Nationwide today, seven states continue to report average retail gas prices above $3 a gallon,” said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. “AAA Hawaii encourages fuel conservation by urging drivers to shop around, consolidate errands and not pack vehicles with unnecessary items which drag on fuel economy.”
