AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch: Prices Rise For Sixth Week

New AAA Survey Shows Most Local Drivers Would Change Driving Habits At $4/Gallon Gas Price

Hawaii gas prices rose for the sixth straight week throughout the islands, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s statewide average price is $3.49, three cents more than last Thursday, 10 cents higher than a month ago and 40 cents more than a year ago, according to GasPrices.AAA.com

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular is $3.34, three cents higher than last Thursday, 12 cents higher than on this date a month ago and 40 cents higher than last year at this time. The Hilo average price is $3.54, which is seven cents higher than last Thursday, 14 cents more than on this date last month and 48 cents higher than on this date a year ago. 

“According to a new survey by AAA, 66 percent of drivers in the Western United States say they would change their driving habits if gas prices reached $4 a gallon,” said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. “Among those drivers in our region who would change their habits or lifestyle to offset higher gas prices, 81 percent said they would combine errands or trips, 73 percent said they would drive less, 55 percent said they would reduce shopping or dining out, 47 percent said they would carpool and 45 percent said they would drive a more fuel-efficient vehicle.”

In Kahului the average price is $3.92, one cent higher than last Thursday, eight cents higher than on this date last month and 42 cents higher than on this date a year ago.  Lihue’s average price for regular is $3.62, which is three cents higher than last Thursday, one cent lower than on this date last month and 24 cents more than a year ago. Wailuku’s average is $3.92, one cent higher than last Thursday, eight cents higher than a month ago and 42 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
