Higher oil prices have finally made an impact on local gas prices over the last week with the biggest increases so far of the year in some locations, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s statewide average price for regular unleaded is $3.39 a gallon, which is up three cents from last Thursday and up eight cents from a month ago.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $3.23, which is up four cents from a week ago, up five cents from last month, and down 27 cents from the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $3.56, which is four cents higher than last week, five cents higher than last month, and 19 cents lower than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $3.64, which is nine cents higher than last week, 11 cents higher than last month, and 10 cents lower than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $3.69, which is two cents higher than last week, five cents higher than last month and 18 cents lower than a year ago today.
“Higher oil prices have pushed up gas prices throughout the U.S. since the beginning of 2021, but have not had much of an impact locally until this week,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “Even with this week's increase, Hawaii’s statewide average price is still 11 cents lower than the California average."
