The state gas price average increased by a penny during the past week, putting it within a cent of $4.00 a gallon, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.
Today’s statewide average price for regular unleaded is $3.99 a gallon, which is one cent higher than last Thursday, 10 cents higher than a month ago, and 80 cents higher than the average last year on the same date.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $3.92, which is up one penny from a week ago, nine cents higher than last month, and 92 cents higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.05, which is unchanged from last week, eight cents higher than last month, and 59 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $4.00, which is five cents higher compared to last week, 13 cents higher than last month, and 55 cents higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.20, which is up three cents from last week, 13 cents higher than last month and 67 cents higher than a year ago today.
“Rising oil prices internationally and increasing tourism in the state have contributed to rising gas prices in most regions,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. AAA recommends The Auto Club recommends motorists try fuel conservation tactics such as driving conservatively, anticipating road conditions ahead to avoid fast stops and starts and avoiding excessive idling.
