All metro areas of the state saw price drops for the third straight week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average regular unleaded gas price for Hawaii is $5.39, which is down three cents from last week. The average national price is $3.99, which is down 15 cents from a week ago and it is the lowest drop since March.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $5.28, which is four cents lower than last week, 24 cents lower than a month ago, and $1.26 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $5.40, which is seven cents lower than last week, 25 cents lower than last month, and $1.27 higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price of $5.59 is two cents lower than last week, 18 cents lower than last month and $1.46 higher than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $5.71, which is two cents lower than week, 15 cents lower than last month, and $1.39 higher than a year ago.
“Drivers in Hawaii are now paying the highest gas prices in the country. Even though we are still seeing the price drop, it has not been significant in comparison to other states where gas has dropped by 70 cents or more from their record levels,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “The price is based on many factors ranging from the price of crude oil, refining, distribution, marketing, taxes along with local supply and demand factors.”
AAA Hawaii reminds drivers they can save money on gasoline by shopping around virtually using a tool like the AAA Mobile app, which shows users the cheapest gas prices near them. AAA members can also take advantage of discounted gas prices at participating Shell gas stations by joining the Shell Fuel Rewards® program.
