Gas prices remained mainly stable throughout the state this past week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average regular unleaded gas price for Hawaii is $5.21, which is the down one cent from last week. The average national price is $3.76, which is down eight cents from a week ago.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $5.18, which is one cent higher than last week, one cent higher than a month ago, and 97 cents higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $5.08, which is the same for the third straight week, three cents lower than last month, and 75 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price of $5.31 is two cents lower than last week, nine cents lower than last month and 97 cents higher than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $5.55, which is one cent higher than last week, five cents lower than last month, and $1.01 higher than a year ago.
“The U.S. gas price average dropped by a penny a day over the last week, largely driven by dramatic price drops in West Coast states that had experienced price spikes in September and early October,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “Alaska’s average price dropped below Hawaii’s over the past week, making Hawaii the second-most expensive state for gasoline behind California, where today’s state average is $5.64.”
AAA Hawaii reminds drivers they can save money on gasoline by shopping around virtually using a tool like the AAA Mobile app, which shows users the cheapest gas prices near them. AAA members can also take advantage of discounted gas prices at participating Shell gas stations by joining the Shell Fuel Rewards® program.
