Average gas prices in Hawaii either climbed by a penny or remained flat over the past week, while the price of oil dipped during the same period, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average price for Hawaii is $4.36, up one cent from last week. The average national price is $3.41, down a penny from last week.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.27, which is up a penny from a week ago, 16 cents higher than a month ago, and $1.21 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.36, which has not changed for two weeks, is 15 cents higher than last month, and 90 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $4.47, which is up one penny compared to last week, 21 cents higher than last month, and 97 cents higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.57, which is one cent lower compared to last week, 14 cents higher than last month and 96 cents higher than a year ago today.
“The U.S. benchmark oil has floated between $81 and $78 per barrel during the past week and, in recent days, stayed below $80,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “Wholesale prices in many parts of the country have also dipped, so barring any major refinery issues or storms, we seem to be at a plateau for gas prices.”
