Hawaii’s average gas prices began the New Year in about the same place they ended 2021, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.  The average price for Hawaii is $4.33, down a penny from last week.  The average national price is $3.30, up a penny from last week.

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.23, which is unchanged for four weeks, one cent lower than a month ago, and $1.11 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.33, down a penny from last week, a penny higher than last month, and 82 cents higher than on this date a year ago.

In Kahului, the average price is $4.52, which is up a penny compared to last week, a penny higher than last month, and $1.02 higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.63, which is unchanged for two weeks, one cent higher than last month and 99 cents higher than a year ago today.

“Oil prices have been increasing this past week, but that impact may be tempered with concerns over what the Omicron variant of Covid may do to travel and gasoline demand,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager.
