Oil prices continue climbing toward $100 a barrel and local gas prices rose for the second straight week in response, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average price for Hawaii is $4.41, which is three cents higher than last week. The average national price is $3.41, up six cents from a week ago.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.30, which is two cents above last week, eight cents higher a month ago, and $1.12 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.41, up two cents from last week, eight cents higher than a month ago, and 89 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $4.58, which is six cents higher than last week, six cents higher than last month, and $1.03 higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.71, which is up three cents from last week, seven cents higher than last month and $1.01 higher than a year ago today.
“Oil prices have climbed by more than 10 dollars a barrel in the past month due to world tensions and OPEC concerns,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “The statewide average price for Hawaii and Honolulu’s average price are now within 20 cents of their all-time records set ten years ago. To save money at the pump, we remind drivers to combine errands for fewer trips, drive gently and don’t speed, and shop around for the lowest gas prices with tools such as the AAA Mobile app.”
