Hawaii gas prices are on the rise, driven in part by the conflict in the Middle East, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, and elevated crude oil prices on the global market, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.
The statewide average price for regular unleaded is $5.48 per gallon, which is 8 cents higher than last week and $1.01 higher than the same time last year. The national average price is $4.43 per gallon, which is 16 cents higher than last week and $1.23 higher than a year ago.
At $5.48 per gallon, Hawaii has the third-highest average gas price in the nation, behind Washington at $5.57 and California at $6.08.
In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.42 per gallon, which is 8 cents higher than last week and $1.04 higher than a year ago. The average price in Hilo is $5.59 per gallon, which is 8 cents higher than last week and 95 cents higher than a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $5.52 per gallon, which is 9 cents higher than last week and $1.04 higher than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular unleaded is $5.72 per gallon, which is 7 cents higher than last week and 73 cents higher than a year ago.
“Gas prices in Hawaii are rising as global market uncertainty and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz put upward pressure on crude oil prices,” said AAA Hawaii spokesperson Kandace Redd. “Crude oil remains high, averaging $100 per barrel. While drivers can’t control global oil markets, they can take steps to save at the pump by shopping around for the best price, using fuel discounts, and combining errands to reduce fuel consumption.”
The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Sept. 17, averages are:
