Hawaii’s average gas prices have remained flat in January because of rising oil prices being muted by concerns over how the Omicron variant of Covid may affect demand and tourism, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.  The average price for Hawaii is $4.34, up a penny from last week.  The average national price is $3.30, the same as a week ago.

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.24, which is up a penny from last week and a month ago, and $1.12 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.33, which is unchanged from last week, two cents lower than last month, and 83 cents higher than on this date a year ago.

In Kahului, the average price is $4.52, which is unchanged compared to last week and last month, and $1.04 higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.63, which is unchanged for three weeks, one cent higher than last month and 99 cents higher than a year ago today.

“Oil prices have climbed to levels not seen since last November, in part due to the unrest in Kazakhstan, a member of the OPEC+ alliance, but that impact may be muted for now because of ongoing concerns about how the Omicron variant may reduce demand for gasoline,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager.
