Hawaii drivers continue to pay some of the highest average gas prices in the nation, with prices remaining elevated due in part to the conflict in the Middle East, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, and higher crude oil prices, according to AAA Hawaii's Weekend Gas Watch.
Today's statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Hawaii is $5.42, down one cent from last week and 96 cents higher than this time last year. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.09, up 15 cents from last week and 94 cents higher than this time last year.
At $5.42 per gallon, Hawaii has the second-highest average gasoline price in the nation. California leads the nation at $5.57 per gallon, while Washington ranks third at $5.07 per gallon.
In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.37 per gallon, down one cent from last week and 99 cents higher than this time last year. Drivers in Hilo are paying an average of $5.53 per gallon, up two cents from last week and 87 cents higher than this time last year. The average price in Kahului is $5.38 per gallon, down 11 cents from last week and 91 cents higher than this time last year. In Lihue, drivers are paying an average of $5.76 per gallon, down three cents from last week and 74 cents higher than this time last year.
"While higher gas prices can put a strain on household budgets, drivers can take a few simple steps to stretch every gallon," said AAA Hawaii spokesperson Kandace Redd. "Keeping your tires properly inflated, avoiding rapid acceleration and hard braking, combining errands into one trip, and removing unnecessary weight from your vehicle can all help improve fuel efficiency and help drivers save money at the pump."
The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on July 23, averages are:
