Hawaii gas prices dropped slightly in most areas last week despite global market volatility driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, according to AAA Hawaii’s Weekend Gas Watch.
Today’s statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $5.64, down one cent in a week and up $1.14 from this time last year. The highest recorded statewide average price was $5.67, set on April 19, 2026.
The national gas price average is $4.30, up 27 cents in a week and $1.12 higher than last year. Nationally, gas prices are at their highest level in four years, dating back to late July 2022, as oil prices rise above $100 per barrel and uncertainty continues over when the Strait of Hormuz will reopen.
Hawaii drivers are paying, on average, $1.34 more than drivers in other states, with the state still ranking second in the nation for the highest gas prices. California remains the highest at $6.01 per gallon, while Washington is the third highest at $5.57 per gallon.
In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.60 per gallon, down two cents from last week and $1.18 higher than a year ago. In Hilo, drivers are paying $5.61 per gallon, down three cents from last week and 95 cents higher than a year ago. In Kahului, the average price is $5.68 per gallon, up one cent in a week and $1.17 higher than a year ago. In Lihue, the average is $5.94 per gallon, down four cents from last week and 84 cents higher than a year ago.
“Given continued volatility in global oil markets, Hawaii drivers may see ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices,” said Auto Club spokesperson Kandace Redd. “Drivers can help manage fuel costs by combining trips, maintaining proper tire pressure, and driving at steady speeds. They can also use the free AAA mobile app to find the lowest gas prices nearby or compare prices before filling up. Even small adjustments in driving habits can add up over time.”
The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on April 30, averages are:
