Gas prices statewide are increasing, trailing behind California, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The statewide average price for regular unleaded is $4.78, six cents higher than last week. The national average gas price is $3.67, four cents higher than last week.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.67, seven cents higher than last week, two cents higher than last month, and ten cents higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.88, which is three cents higher than last week, eight cents higher than last month, and seven cents higher than a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price of $4.82 which is four cents higher than last week, three cents lower than last month, and four cents lower than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $5.24, which is the same as last week, four cents higher than last month, and one cent higher than a year ago.
“This past week, Hawaii experienced the biggest one-week gas price increase of the year so far,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “Oil prices have risen by more than 10 percent since the start of the year, so gas prices in Hawaii are finally feeling that impact. However, local prices are still well below $5.45 average price in California, the most expensive state for gasoline.”
