For the second week in a row, Hawaii drivers are facing growing pressure at the pump as gas prices climb to record-breaking levels in some areas, according to AAA Hawaii’s Weekend Gas Watch.

Today’s statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is a record-breaking $5.65, unchanged from yesterday, but up two cents from last week, up 70 cents over the past month, and $1.13 higher than a year ago. The previous record price before this month was $5.62, set on July 9, 2022.

The recent surge in gas prices is largely driven by rising global oil prices, as the ongoing conflict in Iran disrupts key energy supply routes and tightens global supply.

Nationally, the gas price average dropped seven cents in the past week to $4.09 following a temporary ceasefire earlier this month between the U.S. and Iran. The highest recorded national average was $5.02 on June 14, 2022.

Hawaii still ranks second in the nation for the highest gas prices, behind California at $5.86 per gallon and followed by Washington in third at $5.38 per gallon.

In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.62 per gallon, up five cents from last week and $1.19 higher than a year ago. Honolulu gas prices have been setting new record highs for the past week, surpassing the previous record of $5.52 recorded on July 4, 2022.

In Hilo, drivers are paying $5.64 per gallon, down two cents from last week and 98 cents higher than a year ago. This marks a slight relief from last week’s record high of $5.68 on April 11, 2026. In Kahului, the average price is $5.67 per gallon, unchanged from last week and $1.16 higher than a year ago. In Lihue, the average is $5.96 per gallon, up one cent from last week and 86 cents higher than a year ago. The highest recorded price was set yesterday at $5.97.

“With gas prices remaining elevated across Hawaii, small, practical choices can help drivers save at the pump,” said Kandace Redd, AAA Hawaii spokesperson. “Planning and combining errands, along with other efficient driving habits like comparing prices and maintaining vehicles properly, can help drivers stretch their fuel budget further.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on April 16, averages are:
