All metro areas of the state saw price drops for the second straight week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average regular unleaded gas price for Hawaii is $5.42, which is down six cents from last week. The average national price is $4.14, which is down 13 cents from a week ago.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $5.32, which is five cents lower than last week, 20 cents lower than a month ago, and $1.31 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $5.47, which is five cents lower than last week, 17 cents lower than last month, and $1.34 higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price of $5.61 is nine cents lower than last week, 20 cents lower than last month and $1.51 higher than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $5.73, which is five cents lower than week, 11 cents lower than last month, and $1.42 higher than a year ago.
“Hawaii gas prices are still just about 20 cents below their all-time record levels of June and July, which is a bit disappointing considering that other states have dropped by 70 cents or more from their record levels,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “However, oil prices continue to drop and that should spur more price decreases locally.”
AAA Hawaii reminds drivers they can save money on gasoline by shopping around virtually using a tool like the AAA Mobile app, which shows users the cheapest gas prices near them. AAA members can also take advantage of discounted gas prices at participating Shell gas stations by joining the Shell Fuel Rewards® program.
