Hawaii drivers are seeing some relief at the pump as gas prices continue to trend lower ahead of the busy Independence Day travel season, according to AAA Hawaii’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has declined for the fifth consecutive week. Today’s national average is $3.91 per gallon, down eight cents from last week and 69 cents higher than a year ago.

At $5.53 per gallon, Hawaii has the highest average gasoline price in the nation, followed by California at $5.50 per gallon. Washington ranks third at $5.27 per gallon.

In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.48 per gallon, down four cents from last week and $1.09 higher than a year ago. Drivers in Hilo are paying $5.59 per gallon, down four cents from last week and 95 cents higher than a year ago. The average price in Kahului is also $5.59 per gallon, down four cents from last week and $1.13 higher than a year ago. In Lihue, the average price is $5.87 per gallon, down three cents from last week and 83 cents higher than a year ago.

"With Independence Day travel around the corner, lower gas prices are helping families stretch their transportation budgets a little further," said AAA Hawaii spokesperson Kandace Redd. "Eleven million residents of Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington will travel for Independence Day, and more than 8 million of them will hit the road. To maximize fuel efficiency, AAA Hawaii recommends keeping tires properly inflated, avoiding aggressive driving, removing unnecessary cargo, and using tools such as the free AAA Mobile app to find the lowest gas prices along your route or estimate fuel costs with the AAA Gas Cost Calculator."

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on June 25, averages are:
