Gas prices dropped for the fourth straight week throughout Hawaii, but the state average continued to edge out California in the past week as the most expensive in the U.S., according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average regular unleaded gas price for Hawaii is $5.34, which is down five cents from last week and a penny higher than the California state average price of $5.33. The average national price is $3.93, which is down six cents from a week ago.

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $5.23, which is five cents lower than last week, 28 cents lower than a month ago, and $1.22 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $5.31, which is nine cents lower than last week, 32 cents lower than last month, and $1.18 higher than on this date a year ago.

In Kahului, the average price of $5.55 is four cents lower than last week, 18 cents lower than last month and $1.42 higher than a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $5.68, which is three cents lower than week, 16 cents lower than last month, and $1.36 higher than a year ago.

“Gas prices are heading downward, but not as quickly as in other states,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “There are now many locations statewide charging less than $5 a gallon for regular unleaded, even though all of Hawaii’s metro average gas prices remain well above $5.”

AAA Hawaii reminds drivers they can save money on gasoline by shopping around virtually using a tool like the AAA Mobile app, which shows users the cheapest gas prices near them. AAA members can also take advantage of discounted gas prices at participating Shell gas stations by joining the Shell Fuel Rewards® program.
