Local gasoline prices gas prices continued to climb during the past week, rising between two and 10 cents depending on the region, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s statewide average price for regular unleaded is $3.69 a gallon, which is up six cents from last Thursday, 22 cents higher than a month ago, and 33 cents higher than the average last year on the same date.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $3.57, which is up six cents from a week ago, 25 cents higher than last month, and 36 cents higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $3.81, which is up three cents from last week, 18 cents higher than last month, and 30 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $3.77, which is up ten cents compared to last week, 16 cents higher than last month, and 18 cents higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $3.89, which is two cents higher than last week, nine cents higher than last month and 27 cents higher than a year ago today.
“Price increases accelerated in some areas during the past week due to more people getting vaccinated and more tourists arriving to the islands which increases demand,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “To help mitigate the effects of rising gas prices, AAA recommends drivers shop for lower prices, combine their errands, remove excess items from the vehicle to reduce weight and drive moderately.”
