Leading up to Christmas, Hawaii’s average gas prices dropped a penny or two in some regions and remained flat in others over the past week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average price for Hawaii is $4.33, down a penny from last week. The average national price is $3.29, down three cents from last week.
In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.23, which is unchanged for two weeks, four cents lower than a month ago, and $1.12 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.34, unchanged from a week ago, two cents lower than last month, and 84 cents higher than on this date a year ago.
In Kahului, the average price is $4.50, which is down two cents compared to last week, four cents higher than last month, and $1.01 higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.63, which is up a penny compared to last week, four cents higher than last month and $1.01 higher than a year ago today.
“With strong demand for gasoline continuing into the winter, we haven’t seen much of a decline in oil prices below $70 per barrel nationally,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “We will have to see how much of an impact the Omicron variant of COVID has on gasoline demand in the next couple of weeks.”
