Gas Prices

While average gas prices continued to climb during the past week in some regions other areas remained flat, indicating that the price of gasoline may have caught up with the cost of oil, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.  The average price for Hawaii is $4.35, up one cent from last week. The average national price is $3.42, unchanged from last week.

In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded is $4.26, which is unchanged from a week ago, 23 cents higher than a month ago, and $1.19 higher than the price on this date last year. The Hilo average gas price is $4.36, which is unchanged from last week, 21 cents higher than last month, and 87 cents higher than on this date a year ago.

In Kahului, the average price is $4.46, which is up six cents compared to last week, 27 cents higher than last month, and 94 cents higher than on this date a year ago. Lihue’s average price for regular is $4.58, which is one cent higher compared to last week, 20 cents higher than last month and 97 cents higher than a year ago today.

“Although international demand for oil remains strong, we seem to have hit a plateau in Hawaii relative to gas prices,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “We’ll have to see in upcoming days how long gas prices remain somewhat flat.”
